A 6-night voyage from Fort William to Inverness offers a remarkable passage through the heart of the Scottish Highlands, following the historic line of the Caledonian Canal. Linking salt and freshwater lochs beneath some of Scotland’s highest mountains, this journey is less about open ocean sailing and offers a gentle voyage through glens, forests and legendary waters.
Embarking in Fort William beneath the shadow of Ben Nevis, Eda Frandsen begins her inland voyage along Neptune’s Staircase — a dramatic flight of canal locks that lifts us gradually into the Great Glen. Over the course of the week, we pass through Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and the vast expanse of Loch Ness, navigating a series of beautifully engineered locks and swing bridges that connect these ancient waterways. Each day brings steady progress eastwards, typically cruising for 3-4 hours, before mooring each evening in peaceful Highland settings — alongside wooded banks, at small canal-side villages, or beneath open skies.
There will be the opportunity to spend time ashore throughout the voyage. Walk forest trails scented with pine, visit the ruins of Urquhart Castle on the shores of Loch Ness, explore Fort Augustus as boats gather at its lock gates, or simply enjoy the quiet ritual of watching the canal at work.
All meals are freshly prepared on board. Expect hearty Highland fare, seasonal Scottish produce, warming soups, fresh bread, local cheeses and generous puddings served around the saloon table.
As with all of our journeys, our daily schedule is shaped by canal opening times and weather conditions, making the most of scenic moorings and Highland communities along the way. While timings may vary, our experienced crew ensure a smooth and rewarding passage through this iconic route.
Your voyage is fully inclusive, with all onboard meals covered in the price. Our adaptable chef is happy to cater to dietary needs, while you choose how involved you’d like to be — helping with lines at the locks, learning about the canal’s history, or simply enjoying the rare pleasure of drifting through Scotland’s interior by traditional sailing vessel.
