The voyage will end in Mallaig on Friday, the 7th of May 2027 at 0900hrs
Hannah Close is a writer and artist exploring islandness and the genius loci or ‘spirit of place ’, working with words, photography and film. A Stone Made of Circle, her island waybook, is out in winter 2027 with Humans & Nature Press. She is also making a documentary called Islandness, work which extends through the Islandness Gatherings on the Isle of Ulva, and voyages co-steered aboard Eda Frandsen.
Her courses for the transformative learning platform Advaya include Wild Imagination: Exploring Creative Ecology and KINSHIP: Islands. She has also co-steered creative residencies under sail with Sail Britain, and is part of the Dark Mountain Project team. Earlier, she founded the Experimental Thought Co, a London-based cultural events hub, where she curated the Human//Nature series. She is from the West Country and lives in the Hebrides with her dog Rune.
Hannah’s work on islandness explores what islands can teach us about our connection to the natural world, and themes such as identity and community. Her writing and research delves into not only island culture, but how the metaphor of an island can be used to mirror the way that all beings exist in tension between individuality and interdependence.
At the core of her work are the questions: What is this elusive spirit of islandness? And why are we so drawn to islands – what lies at the root of their compelling, dream-like attraction?
For this voyage, we would like to invite participants to have some level of personal ongoing creative practice; it could be as a visual artist, writer, filmmaker, poet or musician.
